History

Canterbury School is the outgrowth of a home-based baby-sitting service initiated in 1954 by the school’s founder, Mrs. Olline Bush.  In 1956, as the result of increased enrollment, the service was upgraded to a state-licensed child care facility and named the “Stork Resort Nursery,” serving children ages 2 – 5.  During the 1970’s, pre-school services were expanded to include kindergarten, first, and second grades.  In 1974, the “Stork Resort Nursery” was renamed “Canterbury School”.  In 1990, “Canterbury School, Inc.” was approved for non-profit tax-exempt status.

In 2006, under the new leadership of Executive Director, Tracy Martin, Canterbury opened its doors to infants and toddlers for the first time. In 2009, Canterbury School moved to its current location at 1140 University Drive. We currently provide full-time programs for infants through pre-kindergarteners, and afterschool enrichment and summer camp for kindergarteners through second graders. Canterbury School will add kindergarten, first, and second grades in the upcoming years.
